Rescue
Adventure/ Drama
Feature Film
In
Washington a middle-aged man, JACK NICHOLS,
goes to see his Congressman. Nichols’ daughter,
Claudia has been kidnapped by a breakaway
Khmer Rouge guerrilla group in Cambodia .
But Washington can’t help.
Nichols raises as much money as he can
and heads for Bangkok , Thailand , where
an ex-special Forces man, HARRY DEAN, now
runs a saloon. Nichols persuades Harry to
put together a team to rescue his daughter.
The
team is a wild bunch of assorted characters:
BRUNO, with whom Harry has a mentoring relationship;
the enigmatic WOODS; cold-as-ice ENGLISH;
the “Peaceful-tis-he’s-roused” man-mountain
PARIS; “Off- the-planet and off-the-wall” HAZE;
Harry’s ex-vet pal REDDICK; sharpshooter
STEFANELLI; loverman REUBEN; the buffed-up
WES; and their sophisticated Cambodian guide
TRAN.
Pretending
to be a documentary film crew the team
piles into a bus to travel from Bangkok
to head for the Cambodian border. But the
late-as-usual Bruno is missing. The bus
leaves without him, but picks him up (literally)
as he’s being chased on
his motor bike by some Thai gangsters.
Not
long after crossing the border into Cambodia
the bus is brought to halt by a Cambodian “army patrol”,
and surrounded by a group of army vehicles.
With guns pointed at the men they climb
down from the bus. It looks like big trouble,
but turns out to be their supplies of weaponry
that the Cambodians swap for cameras and
photographic equipment.
Unfortunately, as they are checking the
weapons, Wes discharges his rifle, killing
one of the Cambodians. Wes is distraught,
and goes to explain to the Cambodian officer,
but instead is shot. A bloody battle ensues.
The rest of the team survives and goes on
to take the army jeeps and drive onwards
to head for the river.
RICK,
the boat skipper, and his wife MARAMET
help them transfer everything onto the
river boat. Rick tells Tran that he thinks
he might know where a group of hostages
are being held – up river 4-5 hours.
As they motor up the tranquil river a boat
suddenly heads straight for them. Bandits!
With most of the team below deck the bandits
pull alongside. English dives overboard and
silently swims to the other side of the bandit
boat. He kills one of the bandits, grabs
his gun and starts shooting. A massive conflict
ensues which finally ends as the bandits
boat explodes in flames.
The
bandits are wiped out but Harry Dean is
badly wounded. However, before he dies,
he tells the reluctant Bruno that he’ll
have to take over.
They
continue up river. At night time they approach
the village where the hostages are being
held. But there is a deathly silence in
the village. All they find are dead bodies.
And Claudia isn’t amongst them.
As Haze is looking for drugs he opens a
booby-trapped box which explodes and kills
him.
Then they discover a teenager hiding in
the bushes. He leads them as they set out
through the jungle to another village. They
wade across rivers and through thicker growth.
Eventually they come to the village. Here
they plainly see Khmer Rouge cadres. They
spread out to approach a hooch that appears
to be guarded. Under cover of dark a small
group approaches the hooch and silently kill
the guards.
As they enter the hooch there is a scream
from Claudia - nine months pregnant and in
labor. A Cambodian woman is looking after
her. The team starts to carry her out, but
another scream alerts the other cadres.
What follows is a war. Explosions, shooting,
fire, smoke and screams fill the air. Many
of the team are killed. In the middle of
it all Claudia delivers her baby.
When the fighting finally dies down the
teenage boy leads the remaining few back
to the river.
They finally return to the Cambodian/Thai
border where Nichols is emotionally re-united
with his daughter and meets his granddaughter
for the first time.
