Freedom!
Adventure/ Drama
Feature Film
In
a future Dark Age a tribe of men called
the Margai ("Mah-guy") have established
villages inhabited by young people of all
ages. When they are old enough to breed,
the children are paired off and mated. Then,
once the new generation has been born, the
young parents are herded off to the mountains
and uncertain fate.
In one village a youth called ROWAN has
grown sick of his own passivity, and is troubled
by his inability to make life better, especially
for RADA, the girl he loves. He shares his
frustration with his friend EWAN, a profound
thinker who asks the same questions: Isn't
there more to life than simply staying alive?
Rowan
explores the forbidden, barren zones beyond
the village. During one such foray he glimpses
a grown-up man, and sets out to find him.
Climbing the Big Stones, Rowan falls and
is knocked unconscious. He awakens in the
care of the old man, CASPER , the last
of a forgotten band of freedom fighters.
Wise, humorous Casper regales him with tales
of the old days, when men were free to choose
their own destinies. Rowan decides that it
is better to fight for freedom and die than
to live as a slave.
Meanwhile, in the village, the new Margai
Chief, SCAR - clearly more intelligent than
his predecessor - has decreed the Breeding
Time. In Rowan's absence Rada is forced to
mate with LON, a cocky bully who threatens
to tell the Margai about Rowan and Casper
unless Rada submits to him.
With the help of AGATHA, a brave, nurturing
adult woman, whose task it is to look after
the smallest children, Kiri, Rada and the
other girls deliver healthy babies.
Rowan
is captured and returned to the village
and thrown into the refuse pit to rot. Scar
announces it is time for the eldest children
to go to the "rich country" in
the mountains where they will be reunited
with their parents. In truth the parents
are long dead, and only forced-labour camps
await the young people. Preparations are
interrupted by the arrival of the Margai
Chief of Chiefs, who has hunted Scar down.
In a fierce battle the better-prepared Scar
defeats his old master, and decrees himself
Chief of Chiefs. Ewan searches the refuse
pit for Rowan, but finds him gone. A dreadful
fire erupts and, in a heart-wrenching moment,
Kiri perishes.
Some Margai guards march the young people
into the mountains, but are ambushed by Casper
and Rowan, and Rowan leads his liberated
friends back to the village to free the others.
As
the others flee the village, Rowan stays
behind to meet the returning Margai army.
Lon,repenting his selfishness,
joins Rowan, and the two young men fight
bravely before they fall, but they gain the
time needed for the others to escape. The
new tribe of free young people heads into
a new age of freedom, with the visionary
Ewan as their leader.
