Just before Sherlock Holmes is about to do his arch rival Professor Moriarty in, the Professor downs an alchemical concoction that transports him into the future. Due to some technical problems the Professor rematerializes as a talking matzoh ball instead of a human being at the famous L.A. eatery Canters. Luckily a sickly poet/bus boy saves him from being dumped in the trash. The bus boy and his brother belong to a small-time crime ring and the Professor quickly becomes the genius behind their neighborhood crime sprees, turning the group of petty thieves into sophisticated bank robbers. Meanwhile a strange friendship develops between the sickly young man and the Professor. When the boy is on his death bed, Professor Moriarty, the talking matzoh ball, decides, for once in his life, to make the ultimate sacrifice, thus showing a kindness that even Sherlock Holmes never expected him capable of.
