Black
Stallion 3
Adventure/Love Story
Film
The
year is 1954. ALEC RAMSAY, 16, a famous jockey,
dreams of racing his prized stallion, THE
BLACK, again. Alec's surrogate father and
the The Black's trainer, HENRY DAILEY, wants
to retire The Black. One night Black revolts,
threatening the other stallons on their ranch,
the Hopeful Farm, and almost injuring Henry.
Henry now wants Black sent away, but Alec
pleads with him to reconsider. Henry decides
to send Black to a friend's ranch near the
Mojave Desert. Alec accompanies Black on the
airplane voyage. While in flight, Black is
stricken with a bad case of cramp colic and
begins to panic, which causes the place to
crash land in the Rockies. Alec opens his
eyes in the midst of dark and snowbound forest.
He is badly bruised and bloody. Not only that,
he has no idea who he is or how he got there.
His mind is completely blank, as he searches
his clothes for some sort of identification
but finds only a wad of bloodstained money.
He stumbles to the nearest road and hitches
a ride with a traveling salesman, BILL WASHBURN.
While driving, they hear a radio news report
about a young man wanted for murder and robbery.
The description fits Alec. Unsure of his identity,
Alec thinks this might be him and, before
Bill can turn him in, runs off into the desert.
Days later he is discovered, half-conscious,
by a Navajo boy, JESSE, who takes him to his
reservation home. Meanwhile, The Black is
waging his own battle for survival. Having
endured the plane crash, he must now fight
snowstorms, wolves, and mountain lions.
At the Navajo reservation, Alec is befriended
by a local prospector, SLIM, who gives Alec
a ride to the nearest town. When Alec saves
a colt being dragged behind a truck by a cruel
rancher, CRUIKSHANK, the colt's owner, LLOYD
ALLEN, offers Alec a job on his ranch. Alec
tells Lloyd that his name is 'McGregor,' taken
from the label inside his jacket. Lloyd asks
Alec to help track a band of escaped mares,
apparently lured away by a wild, outlaw stallion
out to the plains. During the night, Alec
hears a strange yet familiar cry from a wild
horse. Unbeknownst to him, it is The Black.
Although Alec tries desperately to remember
anything of his past, he cannot uncover even
the smallest clue. In the morning, Lloyd's
pretty teenage daughter, KATIE, shows up to
give Alec a hand. Much to Alec's dismay, this
headstrong cowgirl refuses to abide by his
request to return to the ranch. In a canyon
overlooking a meadow the two come upon a bizarre
sight: a band of almost forty mares grazes
next to a single stallion. It is The Black.
His body is scarred from the ordeal of the
crash and his thick hair is filled with burrs.
Alec approaches the horse over Katie's frantic
objections: 'You're gonna get killed!' As
if in a trance, Alec slowly moves towards
The Black. Suddenly the horse runs to Alec
and nuzzles him gently. Confused and upset,
Alec confesses his secret to Katie, that he
is suffering from amnesia and has lied to
them about his identity. HeÕs sure
he knows the renegade stallion, but he doesn't
know how. He convinces Katie to let him follow
The Black in hopes of learning his identity.
He mounts up and rides away.
The next day, Lloyd and his men catch up to
Alec and surround and trap the herd in the
canyon. One of them draws his rifle to shoot
The Black, but Alec knocks from his hand.
Lloyd agrees to let Alec try to bring the
stallion in unharmed and, as they watch stupefied,
Alec halters The Black and leads him out of
the meadow. When Lloyd sees Alec riding, he
is amazed by his expertise and by The Black's
speed. He asks Alec to race against a rival
rancherÕs thoroughbred, NIGHT WIND.
Back in town, Cruikshank reads about the murderer
matching AlecÕs description in the
local paper and plots his revenge. When the
day of the big race arrives, Alec watches
Katie win an early race on her own horse.
In the meantime, Slim has come across a photo
of Alec and The Black in an old magazine.
As Slim rushes to town, Cruikshank brings
the SHERIFF to arrest Alec. Lloyd entreats
the Sheriff to let Alec race first and then
arrest him. Over Cruikshank's protests, the
Sheriff agrees. Alec starts the race but plans
to jump the railing with The Black on the
far side of the track and escape. Slim arrives
to inform the others of Alec's realy identity.
Alec finds a wave of calm riding The Black.
The position, the speed, the synchronicity
are all familiar to him. He pushes The Black
forward, even as he pushes his entire being
forward as hard as he can to erase his amnesis.
Finally as he slows to escape and The Black
resists, there is a powerful rush of recognition
through which Alec remembers who he is. He
sees flashes of his past and throws his arms
in the air as he rides, shouting to the sky,
'Alec Ramsay! I'm Alec Ramsay!' No longer
thinking of escape, Alec urges The Black back
down the track. The Black responds with an
electrifying burst of speed, overtaking Night
Wind and winning the race. Unable to exonerate
Alec merely on Slim's word, the Sheriff arrests
him but soon receives report that the real
murderer has been apprehended and drops all
charges. After Slim alerts the press, Henry
hears that Alec and The Black are alive and
arrives to take them back to Hopeful Farm.
Parting with Katie, Alec hopes that someday
soon she may watch him race The Black again.
