PILOT EPISODE BEAT SHEET

'THE TAO OF SOCAL'

-- INTRO. Pre-Biker Chef character preparing dinner in his tiny kitchen for guests Sous and Max. Fire on range top prompts him to look for extinguisher. Instead he 'passes through' closet into alternate reality of dry lakebed covered with disintegrating cookbooks. He finds the Tome of the Sated Traveler. The Oracle's face appears in a flash of lightning and he becomes... The Biker Chef, in full road leathers. Back in apartment the fire goes out by itself and Sous and Max are also magically dressed for the road. Montage of cooking utensils assembly and motorcycles kick starting as the team hits the road.

-- SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BEACH. Dawn. The journey is about to begin right here in SoCal. Biker Chef consults the Tome, clues include bread, birds, old, new, fire, trees. They hit the road... south.

-- MISSION AT SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. Morning. Where the swallows return every March 19th. A Nun points them to 319 address where they find the Specialist Cook's organic micro-bakery. See his techniques. Biker Chef chooses a special Native American Fry Bread. Back on the road.

-- BIG BEAR. Late morning. In a boutique jerky shop the Chef makes his selection, inquires about their meat supplier and receives directions to a remote Ranch. Chef smells something interesting and finds Jerky Cook out back smoking meat over custom flavored wood chips. The Cook gives some to the team.

-- OUTSIDE BIG BEAR. Midday. At the Ranch with the best meat in SoCal. Many choices, how to balance it with jerky? Sous and Max disagree, Biker Chef is confused and consults the Oracle. Telepathic exchange leads to concurrence regarding right cut of beef and a killer marinade to differentiate flavors.

-- PIONEER TOWN. Lunch time. Max fires up a hot dog zapper while Chef and Sous prepare the marinade. Celebrity Biker emerges from Pappy & Harriet's Saloon. He suggests a place in 29 Palms known for its barbecue pits. Zap-cooked hot dogs are consumed.

-- ON THE ROAD TO THE DESERT. Afternoon. Biker Chef's mind drifts over clues from the Tome, ingredients he's gathered, places they've been, people they've met. The imagery congeals into a final recipe for his signature southern California dish. Max sends out e-mails, faxes, phone calls inviting people to the cook-off. Sous keeps an eye on the container of marinating meat strapped to his bike.

-- 29 PALMS. Dusk. The team pulls in to Don's American Barbecue and commandeers a freeway-side pit. Guests are arriving. Biker Chef prepares/improvs his one of a kind twist on a common standard and dubs it 'Biker Chef's Nouveau Sloppy Joe.' Max records the recipe for prosperity and the website.

-- EPILOGUE. Sunset. The gathering of acquaintances and strangers tastes the Sloppy Joes. They're delicious. Motorcycles rev as the team takes off without eating. Montage Outro of the feast in progress, Biker Chef and crew on the road, SoCal iconography. Oracle Voice-Over recites a haiku inspired by the episode. Fade out.
